The Uvalde school district police chief at the time of the shooting, Pete Arredondo, was fired by the school board in August. Several officers in the state public safety department are being investigated for their role in the response.

The district had previously fired the chief of the department, Pete Arredondo, who state officials have said was the incident commander during the shooting and bore responsibility for delaying a confrontation with the gunman for over an hour after the shooting began. The gunman killed 19 children and two teachers.

The officer, who took over from Mr. Arredondo, was put on administrative leave by the school district. Mr. Mueller, the director of student services, had decided to retire, the statement said.

GaryPatterson was voted on by the Uvalde ConsolidatedIndependent School District board to serve as the interim superintendent. Two staff members will continue to search for a permanent replacement, the board voted unanimously.

The way officials and law enforcement responded to the Robb Elementary School massacre in May has drawn continued criticism and led to Harrell stepping aside last week.

After the gunman entered Robb Elementary and began firing, multiple officers arrived on the scene minutes later. After taking fire from the gunman, they retreated to a hallway while the gunman remained inside the classrooms for a total of 77 minutes before a tactical unit forced their way in and killed the shooter, according to a timeline from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Uvalde school district is currently under investigation for the actions of a former Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

One of the first people to arrive on the scene was Crimson Elizondo, and he talked to a colleague who asked if there were children at the school.

The student who described the harrowing moment when the school was placed on a locked down said that it was a quiet day at the school.

Novah Jones, who is located in a different classroom, said that an announcement came on saying, “lock down, I repeat lock down.” “I was scared … it was like my first lockdown and I didn’t know what to do, so I just hid under my desk like everybody was.”

The teacher wounded in Friday’s shooting, whose injury was initially described as life-threatening, was listed in stable condition by Saturday, according to the Newport News Police Department.

One of the children is dealing with the trauma of a school shooting. It is still rare in the US to see a shooting in a school, but it is more common than it is in any other country. There were at least 60 shootings at K-12 schools in 2022, according to a CNN analysis.

Richneck Elementary has been closed since the shooting, and some parents have expressed their concern ahead of classes resuming. The student accused in the shooting is in the same class as Mark’s son, who has been distraught since the shooting.

“It is almost impossible to wrap our minds around the fact that a 6 year old 1st grader brought a loaded handgun to school and shot a teacher; however, this is exactly what our community is grappling with today,” Newport News Mayor Phillip D. Jones said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Authorities are “working diligently to get an answer to the question we are all asking – how did this happen? We are also working to ensure the child receives the supports and services he needs as we continue to process what took place,” Jones said.

A spokesman for the district says the principal of Richneck Elementary school in Virginia has been assigned to another school.

The district leadership has come under fire in the last few weeks after a teacher was shot inside her classroom on January 6 and students will return to class for the first time on Monday.

At the time of the shooting incident, Briana FosterNewton was the principal of Richneck Elementary, while Dr.Ebony PARKER was the assistant principal. Briana FosterNewton is employed at Newport News Public Schools. There was a doctor named “Ebby” who resigned. The district told CNN that there was only one thing that it could give at this time.

The district said that Karen Lynch will lead the Richneck team and coordinate the students’ return to instruction.

As Police Chief Steve Drew has said, “no School Resource Officers have been assigned to Richneck. In addition, doors have been installed without one in some classroom areas and repaired or replaced in others.

Administrator Lynch sent an email to the families of students after the announcement of her appointment, showing new protocol for the first day.

Lynch asked that families send their children to school without a book bag as the school will provide clear bags for use in school on Monday, instead of the traditional paper bags.

The school is limiting visitors during the first week of instruction to allow for staff to establish routines, according to the email. Parents who choose to walk their children to school are subject to search and are not allowed to enter classrooms.

“This is a scary situation, my son is still scared,” Garcia told CNN. “He wants to go back to school, but he just wants to know that he’s gonna to be safe, and that’s the biggest thing.”

The school’s alleged failure to act is “horrifying,” Garcia said, adding, “The people who know about this failed us and they failed the security measures of everyone that’s inside of that school.”

Zwerner was critically injured when a bullet passed through one of her hands and struck her chest, police have said. The teacher was released from the hospital.

“Over the course of a few hours, three different times – three times – school administration was warned by concerned teachers and employees that the boy had a gun on him at the school and was threatening people,” attorney Diane Toscano told reporters.

The boy was placed under a temporary detain order after the shooting and was evaluated at a local hospital. He remains unidentified publicly, but his family has been releasing statements through their attorney.
