A panel has been named to review the Trump assassination attempt

The 2016 July 13 Assassination of President Donald Trump Revisited: An Independent Review of the Defense and Security Operations at the Secret Service

“In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement on Sunday.

“This may include utilizing state or local partners to provide specialized functions or otherwise identifying alternatives to reduce public exposure of a protectee,” Guglielmi added.

The agency provided the statement in response to an inquiry from NPR about past security requests from the Trump campaign. Former presidents receive Secret Service protection for life, unless they decline it.

The announcement comes in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump last Saturday, a shooting in which one person was killed and two others critically wounded. Secret Service agents killed the gunman.

Lawmakers in Congress are launching their own investigations into the incident. Lawmakers are expecting briefings in the next few days because of previous concerns about the Secret Service. The committee expects to hear from the director of the Secret Service.

Committee member Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., told NPR he has “a whole lot of questions” about the attempted assassination and believes Cheatle should be fired.

The president has commissioned an independent review of the event, as well as the subject of a criminal investigation by the FBI, so I can’t speak to the facts.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayrokas has named a panel of experts to conduct an independent review of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

“We are committed to getting to the bottom of what happened on July 13, and I am grateful to the distinguished members of this independent review who will bring decades of expertise in law enforcement and security operations to this important investigation,” Mayorkas said, adding: “This independent review will examine what happened and provide actionable recommendations to ensure they carry out their no-fail mission most effectively and to prevent something like this from ever happening again.”

I think it’s human error, not just a perimeter, that’s what I think. “Perimeter really, to me, is just avoiding the fact that there was not sufficient coverage or resources to stop that from happening.”

Any oversight will likely include the various points at which mistakes were made in planning security for the rally. An agent for the Secret Service is charged with standing at the podium where the president is standing and getting a full view of what needs to be covered in such an event, according to William Basham. At that point in the process, it was decided not to directly cover the roof from where the shot was taken.

“There was a breakdown in communications,” he said. “There was a breakdown in terms of security planning, should have had somebody on that roof. I don’t believe there’s a lot of mystery about what happened here.
